9 Marketing Lessons Learned from the Iceland #Euro2016 Football Team

9 Marketing Lessons Learned from the Iceland Euro 2016 Football Team

(who incidentally beat England! ;) )

Not to repeat what has been written and said in media all over, Iceland’s win against England was huge. A true David kicked Goliath’s ass moment! But make no mistake, it was not down to luck. There are a number of factors that lead to Iceland’s win against the most expensive team in the tournament, a team with some of the highest profile and most expensive players in the world.

What I find interesting is how many of them directly relate to business, and marketing to be precise, and how we can learn from the Icelandic team’s achievement and apply as small or medium sized businesses or startups to kick the assess of the Goliaths of big business! Who’s with me? ;)

Thoranna Nice Iceland v England Euro 2016

Here are 9 things which you can learn from the Icelandic national football team and their results in the Euro 2016:

Organization and Planning

Read a few articles that cover the Icelandic team and you will come across the word “organised” a lot. The team keeps their 4-4-2 formation no matter what, which makes their defence stronger than the Tower of London. Having a game plan that everyone adheres to and trusts in is crucial, in football and in business. [Read more…]

Getting Organized: Why Monica Geller would make a great marketer!

Blog - getting organized

A lot of the time it is easy to get the impression that marketing is a very creative and even artsy endeavour. For many, “marketing” conjures up images of advertising agencies with creatives and copywriters and producers and graphic designers and all that stuff. What I have found, however, is that particularly in the beginning, marketing is all about pulling things together, tidying up and getting organized.

Right now, I am doing some tidying up in my own business, as well as building a branding agency with my BRAT Pack partners at Make Your Mark Global. I am also working on two other new projects that are just getting off the ground, and I find that collecting things and getting them organized is a huge part of the work involved.

Admittedly, I can become a bit of an organizing freak, but you know, that is not a bad thing. I actually think Monica Geller (who I am convinced is my sista from another mista) would make a great marketer with her impeccable organisational skills! :)

I know that when other people share with me what they are doing in their business and marketing, I always get a ton out of it. So I thought that I would share with you in this post what I am doing, and hopefully you can put some of this to good use for yourself.

So here are a 9 things to collect and get organised to make your marketing more effective: [Read more…]

What To Do In Your Marketing?!

Blog - what to do in your marketing-

Are you sick of being told do this, do that do blah blah blah … Aaaaaaargh!

So, this marketing thing is kinda my thing. I love it! But you know, even though it’s my thing, and even though I love it, there are still days when I feel like this:

Well, actually, more like this:

Ísold Saga öskrar w600 m logo og border

STOP TELLING ME I HAVE TO DO THIS AND THAT AND EVERYTHING! Stop telling me I have to be on Facebook, and on Twitter, and on Instagram and LinkedIn, and Google+ and have a LinkedIn Group, and have lead magnets and do webinars, and Pinterest and do Periscope and do Google Hangouts and have an email list, and blog, and vlog and grrrroooog or whatever, and do infographics and video series and funnel optimisation and keyword analysis and SEO, and use Google Analytics, and buy more analytics and use Google Search Console, and master copywriting and … just stop!

Because at the end of the day, none of this matters. None of all these shiny objects, with their fiddly things and click here and click that and click this are not going to do anything for me on their own! They’re just not! And there is no way I – or you – or anyone – can be on all of these and do all this stuff well. Not unless we have an army of experts – which, I’m guessing, if you are reading this blog, you don’t have ;)

Yes, they can help. Yes they can be great tools. But just like a carpenter does not need 453 different types of hammers, or 967 different types of nail to build a good wood shed, we don’t need all the tools under the sun to do our marketing. We just need to find the right ones for us.

But how on earth do we do that? [Read more…]

Measuring Marketing Effectiveness

measuring marketing effectiveness

Do you measure effectiveness of your marketing? It’s a cliché: “You can’t manage what you can’t measure.” But clichés are clichés for a reason. And the reason is more often than not because they are true.

  • How do you know whether something is working or whether it’s not?
  • Can you afford to waste time on something that it isn’t working?
  • Can you afford to waste money on something that isn’t working?
  • Is there any reason to be doing things that aren’t working for you?

First of all, every time you do a specific marketing activity or put something in place like when you set up a Facebook page, do a Google AdWords campaign, put an ad in the paper or whatever you are doing, always think about why you’re doing it. What do you want that specific marketing activity to achieve?

Think about the Marketing Process – you can read all about that here. Are you doing this for awareness, to gain interest, build likeability and/or trust, give people a taste of what you offer, to push for the sale, get more sales [Read more…]
